Snorkels will allow a scuba diver to rest on the surface and breathe air without having to keep their head above the water. It is for this reason that snorkels are an important tool in a scuba divers kit. In the past, there have been problems with scuba divers using basic or purge valve snorkels that do not have a flexible insert. This is primarily because the snorkel drifts in front of the scuba divers face, which can become a particular nuisance while scuba diving. To overcome this, a range of snorkels have been released with flexible inserts meaning that they hang beside a scuba divers face without annoying the diver. Adreno recommends this kind of snorkel (such as the Problue Tiara 2) for scuba divers. If you are just wanting to snorkel, however, a more basic snorkel or snorkel with a purge valve would be fine.
